Google AdWords Invades Meatspace

Wow. Google is buying "remnant" ad space in some newspapers for some of their Ad Words customers. Details here. How this works is a bit counter to Google's online business model (pay per click through) but then again the newspapers are certainly getting in bed with the devil. John Cruickshank of the Sun-Times puts it bests when he jokes that when he says, "We were eager to help them shut us down...". Of course he's only half joking. I'm sure he's happy about the short term dollars Google will spend with his ad department. On the other side I'm not sure he can blame Google for his shrinking circulation numbers. About the only physical paper I read anymore is the The Aquarian because of their coverage of the local music scene, but they'd better get their act together and get their content on-line. I've been tempted more than once to try to set up a local music scene blog and try to eat their lunch.
