The Ugly America

I've got a love-hate relationship with Paul Graham's writing. I must say that while at some times being infuriating his prose has lead me to challenge more than one idea that had been cemented into my head. In his latest essay,Made in USA, Graham has seemed to have summed up the predominant American design ethic as "just do it". This seems to have done well for us in some pursuits: the movies, software, music, but poorly in others: architecture, urban planning, and manufacturing. The biggest counterexample of the "just do it" style in U.S. design, Apple. Great article and well worth the time.
